The Private Driver (The 4th Month)

"You can't keep running. Last month when she visited, you lied that you were spending time with your sick mother. You and I know that your mother was hail and hearty when you told that lie. You said you were going to spend only the night at your family house, but we ended up staying at the hotel for two weeks all because we were running away from your mother-in-law. I'm sick and tired of this hide and seek game. Please, face the consequences of your actions and stop behaving like a kid." It was Kenny's voice. He was completely fed up with Dami's games and was even confused as to what she actually wanted. From all indications, she had no intentions of terminating the pregnancy, but she insists there was the need for her to keep hiding it as if it would someday vanish.

"You are now lecturing me right? You are now lecturing me on morals? Kenny, you are opening your mouth to talk to me the way you want right? I don't blame you. I blame myself. It was me who carried myself to come and meet you that night and you successfully got me pregnant. Now, you have the guts to tell me to face the consequences of my actions. You are the one who should face the consequences of your actions. You got me pregnant. I did not get

myself pregnant. But you are here telling me

what to do and what not to do." Dami said angrily.

She was so upset that she literally jumped into the waiting car. She had told Kenny

to drive her away from the compound when she

received a call from her mother-in-law. The old

woman desperately wanted to see her because

they have not seen since her son left the country

and travelled to London. She wants to lie to her

mother-in-law that she travelled to Lagos for

another baking class, so she wanted to leave

the compound before her arrival.

"I'm not saying I don't share part of the blame. I certainly share in the blame, but I have accepted that you are pregnant since I have no powers to change that. You are pregnant and I have told you I will gladly answer the father of the child. I know it is a difficult situation for you but you have to understand that running cannot solve the problem. You can't keep running away from your problems. You have to face your fears and I promise I will be here to support you all the time." Kenny told Dami who was already seated in the car.

"Please drive. I don't want to be here when my mother-in-law comes knocking at the gate." Dami said, her face indifferent.

"I said drive!" She yelled when it became obvious that Kenny was not obeying her orders. Kenny reluctantly turned on the ignition of the car and they drove off.

It was not long after they left the compound when her mother-in-law arrived.

"Where is your Madam?" The woman asked Mimi who was the only one at home when she arrived. She took a seat in the living room of the building, vowing in her heart not to leave the house until she had seen Dami.

"She travelled to Lagos ma. She said she had to finish up her baking class. She will spend one month in Lagos. I'm so sorry, but she did not know you would come today." Mimi said to the old woman, not knowing that she was not going to take any more lies. She has made up her mind to find out the reason behind Dami's continued absence from home.

"Well, it's fine. I'm not angry at all, but I will stay until she returns. Even if she spends a year in Lagos, I'm prepared to wait for her. After all, I'm in my son's house and there is no cause for alarm." The woman said happily while positioning herself properly on the chair. She reached for her handbag and produced a bottle of wine and a shiny glass cup. She poured some of the wine into the cup and started to sip copiously.

"I'm not sure you can wait for her ma. She would spend a long time in Lagos. She has told me to plead with you to go back to Abuja and return next month. She said she would surely be available to host you by that time." Mimi said, hoping that her words would convince the old woman, but she was unsuccessful. She told all the lies in her mouth but the woman refused to go.

"Stop trying to convince me to leave my son's house. If you say one more word I will have you sacked." The mother-in-law said harshly. She relaxed on the chair and enjoyed her wine. One hour later, the woman called Mimi.

"I have decided to go. I believe what you told me about your Madam. I'm so sorry for shouting at you earlier. Besides, I have just realized that I have something important to attend to at home in Abuja, so I will have to go back urgently." She tells Mimi with a smile. Mimi was so happy when the woman packed her bags and finally left the compound. As soon as she left, Mimi picked up her phone and called Dami.

"She has left. She said she has something to attend to in Abuja. But she appeared upset as she had promised to stay and wait for you. But she is gone now. You people can come back to the house." Mimi tells her Madam on the phone. Dami and Kenny hopped into the car and started coming home. The hotel they usually use is a few minutes-drive from the house, so they arrived the compound without much delay.

As soon as they entered the compound, another car followed by. When Dami came down from her car and looked back, she saw her mother-in- law also alighting from her own car. She had deceived Mimi, making her believe she was gone. Meanwhile, she was lurking around the neighborhood, waiting to sight Dami's car so she could follow them. She succeeded.

"No way to escape. I told you we can't keep running. She is here now!" Kenny said.
