Four things we learned from Manchester United’s defeat to Norwich City

Manchester United’s season entered full crisis mode following their disastrous 2-1 home defeat to Norwich City.

Louis van Gaal’s side were yet again laboured in attack and the Old Trafford crowd made their feelings clear on more than one occasion.

Defeat to Norwich leaves United outside of the top-four and on the precipice of disaster. Van Gaal remains convinced he is the right man to turn things around but the situation shows few signs of improving.

Here are four things we learned from United’s latest defeat:

1) Louis van Gaal has lost a large section of the fan-base

Ever since Alex Ferguson’s departure there have been small pockets of supporters unhappy with things at Manchester United. However, following Saturday’s defeat it seems a large section of the club’s support are no longer behind the experienced Dutchman.

Van Gaal left the pitch at full-time to an audible chorus of boos, whistles and jeers. This was the first time this has happened and was akin to David Moyes after Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in 2014.

Once this happens it is very difficult to turn things around and Van Gaal’s mood post-game seemed to reflect that.

2) Anthony Martial is the club’s great hope

Martial, once again played out of position, was excellent. The Frenchman worked his socks off throughout and manufactured a chance for himself when he netted after 64 minutes.

The 20-year-old showed remarkably quick feet to shift his weight and the ball away from Norwich’s defenders before firing the ball into the net. It was a joy to behold and showed just how talented the youngster really is.

Regardless of United’s managerial situation, Martial is a gem, a really wonderful signing and will be a cornerstone for whomever takes the United hot-seat next, be that soon or at the end of the season.

3) Manchester United need to address the full-back issues

Ashley Young isn’t a natural full-back and has performed wonderfully well over the past two seasons when asked to play in that position. However, as with any player who isn’t a natural fit, things creep into his game when at full-back that wouldn’t in a natural player in that area.

Norwich’s first goal was a prime example. Young covered an impressive amount of ground to get into a position to challenge Cameron Jerome yet the challenge was flimsy, Jerome rode it and went on to score. You have to feel a natural defender would have taken the ball away in that position.

4) Memphis Depay needs to be trusted more

One of the great mysteries of Van Gaal’s season has been the treatment of Depay The youngster has by no means been outstanding this year but too often it has felt as though he has been restricted by the manager’s system.

In the final 15 minutes against Norwich it seemed as though Memphis was ignoring his manager’s instructions and he started to take his opposite number on, going on the outside and putting crosses in. Granted the crosses were by no means brilliant but it was a level of application that has seldom been seen from him this season.

Perhaps Van Gaal needs to take the shackles off his more attacking players in order to turn things around, but presently it seems as though it will be too late with Jose Mourinho reportedly waiting in the wings ahead of developments at both the Bernabeu and Old Trafford.
