Whitney - Light Upon the Lake

Emerging from the ashes of Smith Westerns, guitarist Max Kakacek and Julien Ehrlich created a sound tinged with late-’60s, harmony-soaked nostalgia. Ehrlich’s lyrics are winsome, celebrating an America of yawning skies and infinite possibilities, and the arrangements are big, fitting for Whitney’s large touring presence.

“No Woman” uses strings and horns as perfect punctuation, while the “na-na-nas” of “Golden Days” call for arms-around-the-shoulders-style camaraderie. Light Upon the Lake isn’t about grand statements or shifting paradigms but is instead a place of escape and comfort, a perfectly rendered example of guitar-pop at its best.
