These Are The 3 African Countries That Stopped Celebrating Christmas

We all know that Christmas is the most popular Christian celebrations in the world today. Christian faithful celebrate this festival to mark the bird of Jesus Christ. Most countries in Africa celebrate Christmas. In fact, 25th and 26th of December is always a work free day in some Africa countries.

However, Christmas celebration has been stopped or canceled in some Africa countries. In this article, you will know the 3 African countries that stopped celebrating Christmas and the reason for the cancellation.



1. Somalia
Somalia is one of the African countries that stopped celebrating Christmas. This is due to the fact that the country is predominantly a Muslim nation.

However, foreigners in Somalia can celebrate Christmas in their various homes. But they can’t celebrate it in hotels and other public places.

In the past, the country celebrated Christmas. This changed in 2015. According to BBC, the Somalia Government banned Christmas celebrations warning that such Christian festivities could threaten the country’s Muslim’s faith.



2. Guinea
Guinea is also among the African countries that stopped celebrating Christmas. The country actually celebrated Christmas till 2014 and stopped it due to the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus.

The cancellation of Christmas celebration in Guinea was not due to religious or polical reasons. But health concerned and safety of the citizens of Guinea.

The widespread of Ebola virus made the cancellation of Christmas necessary in Guinea. The decision helps to avoid gatherings that will make people vulnerable to the virus, till date beaches in the country are closed, fireworks and firecrackers are banned as well.



3. Sierra Leone
Just like Guinea, Sierra Leone also banned Christmas Celebration due to Ebola Virus in 2014. Soldiers were stationed on streets to ensure that there are no gatherings of any kind during the festivities period.

This decision was necessary to curb the continuous spreading of Ebola virus in the country.
