England fans go mad on Twitter at Rooney's midfield role
The Manchester United forward was deployed in a exceedingly deep role in the World Cup qualifier against Slovakia, leading to fury from many supporters on social media
Sam Allardyce's England reign began in earnest on Sunday as the Three Lions travelled to Slovakia for a World Cup qualifier, but the former Sunderland manager has already infuriated several fans.
Wayne Rooney, who became England's most-capped outfield player in the fixture, was deployed in midfield, and often dropped deeper than Eric Dier, the archetypal anchor man.
Fans on Twitter did not react well to Allardyce's tactics, with Rooney guilty of misplacing a number of passes, and even slowing the team's tempo. Take a look at some of the best reactions below!
Why play Rooney there when you have Drinkwater? And don't start me on the Barry Kane/Jamie Vardy argument again!! #eng— Nick Goldsmith (@NickEGoldsmith) September 4, 2016
Rooney may we well play as a holding midfielder player out there - drops so deep— Levi King (@LJKing10) September 4, 2016
Absolutely ridiculous how deep Rooney is playing. May as well actually play another midfielder.— Alex Simmonds (@alex_simmo) September 4, 2016
Rooney gets the ball passes square rooney gets the ball again passes square rooney gets the ball passes square #zerotempo— scott (@scottiehass1) September 4, 2016
Rooney playing this deep is an absolute travesty though.— Jordan (@Jtrump16) September 4, 2016
"Rooney won't play in midfield"
Rooney spends the whole game as a CDM— Jordan Cooke (@Cooke__) September 4, 2016
