Shorunmu tells Rohr to leave Enyeama alone

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper coach, Ike Shorunmu, has told current handler of the team, Gernot Rohr, to respect the decision of Vincent Enyeama to quit the national team.

Enyeama retired from international football last year, after falling out with former coach, Sunday Oliseh.

However, Rohr has been eager to lure the Lille stopper back to the Eagles fold since he took over in August 2016. He also hinted that the 33-year-old will be recalled, ?if Nigeria qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Shorunmu, who handed over to Enyeama in 2002, says Rohr should continue to keep faith with Carl Ikeme, who has kept five clean sheets in his first seven matches.

“There have been several calls for him (Enyeama) to return to the team, but he has insisted and his decision should be respected even if the manner at which he exited the international scene was not a good one,” Shorunmu told Completesportsnigeria.com.

“He should be left alone! The same thing happening now occurred to me when I retired from international football.”

“There were calls from every quarters that I should return but I stood my ground, to allow other goalkeepers grow into the team.?

“Maybe that’s what Enyeama feels as well. The likes of Ikeme, Daniel Akpeyi and Ikechukwu Ezenwa must be given a chance.”
