No inmate beaten to death by Kwara prison officials – PRO

The Public Relations Officer, PRO, of the Ilorin Prison, in Kwara State, Mr Philip, has refuted reports making the rounds that some prison officials beat six inmates to death after they protested over poor quality of food given to them.

The incident was said to have caused chaos on Thursday at the Oke Kura prison.

According to the widely circulated report, the inmates requested to see the Comptroller General of Prisons so he could address their grievances, but the request was turned down by the warders.

Afterwards, the inmates embarked on a protest in order to draw the attention of the Comptroller to their plight, but unfortunately for them, the warders who were visibly angry over their protest, got the arms squad and allegedly unleashed terror on the prisoners.

Five of the inmates were said to have died on the spot and one of the 12 who suffered injuries died in the hospital.

Some of the dead victims were identified as Jeunlo, Alhaji Faddish and Alhaji Yusuf.

But the PRO, reacting to the attack that has created a lot of tension, said it was not possible for warders to beat inmates to death.

“It is not true and no such thing happened. If you’re in doubt, come down to Ilorin, I will personally lead you to Oke Kura to see things for yourself,” he told newsmen on Friday
