Wolves’ officials allay fear over Ikeme’s fitness

Super Eagles’ Goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme, will be fit for Nigeria’s Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier against Algeria on November 12, officials of his club, Wolverhampton Wanderers, have said.

Ikeme got a slight knock on Saturday while playing for Wolves against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park at the weekend.

He was substituted at half time, but his club manager, Rob Edwards, thinks it is not too serious.

Giving a reason for substituting the goalkeeper in the game, Edwards told the club’s official website, “Carl was struggling around his hip area, which I think came after he stretched to make a save.
“He was having it iced at half time and I don’t yet know the extent of the problem.

“Hopefully he won’t be out for too long because he is very important for us.”

Also speaking on the injury, Ikeme wrote in his official twitter account:

“We deserved at least a point and lads all dug in. Hopefully injury nothing to serious.Congrats @_DaveEdwards great goal and performance.”

Meanwhile, former Enyimba Coach, Kadiri Ikhana, has attributed Super Eagles’ Captain, John Obi Mikel’s lack of playing time for his club Chelsea on his decision to go to the Rio Olympic Games in Brazil instead of joining his London club for pre-season, writes completesportsnigeria.com.

“I have watched Chelsea play several times this season and I am yet to be convinced that Mikel is not good enough to be a starter,” Ikhana said.

“To bench him and at times not list him at all suggests something other than footballing reasons. I guess the coach is angry because Mikel went to the Olympic with the Nigerian team

“The coach being a new man in the club must have wanted to see all the players in pre-season training but Mikel had already been cleared for the Rio Games by the club and I want to believe that Conte did not like that and decided to blacklist the Eagles skipper or how can he explain that Mikel is not good to play the EFL Cup game against West Ham?”
