A Katsina Senior Magistrate Court was told on Tuesday how a small torch exposed a robbery suspect during an operation in the Dutsin-ma area in the Dutsin-ma Local Government Area of the state, Punch Metro reports.

The 22-year old suspect, Nura Labaran, was arraigned for armed robbery and being in possession of sheep suspected to be stolen.

The offences were said to be contrary to Section1 (2)(a)(b) of the Robbery and Firearms, Special Provision Act, Cap R11, LFN,2004, and Section 319 of the Penal Code.

The police told the court that Labaran of Gago village in the Dutsin-ma Local Government Area of the state robbed one Lawal Abdullahi at the back of Isa Kaita College of Education, Dutsin-ma.

According to the police, Labaran took to his heels when Lawal raised the alarm that he was being robbed, an action which police said made those nearby to come to his rescue.

The police said Labaran allegedly left behind the torch and a cutlass at the scene of the operation. The police told the court that the torch was later traced to Labaran, leading to his arrest.

He (Labaran) reportedly owned up to the crime during interrogation.

Magistrate Hajiya Dikko said Labaran’s case would be tried by a high court, depending on legal advice from the state Ministry of Justice after police investigation.

She said, “This court will not ask you whether the allegations against you are true or false as cases of armed robbery are triable by the high court. A copy of your case file would be sent to the state Ministry of Justice for legal advice after police investigation.”

Dikko adjourned the case till June 19 for mention and ordered that Labaran be kept in custody till then.
